What are Prefold Diapers?

In this modern, throw-away age of convenience, more and more parents are now choosing to become more environmentally responsible about what diapers to use on their babies.

The problem is that when you consider the options, many people are clueless as to what prefold diapers are and understandably so, considering the very successful marketing strategies utilized by disposable diaper companies. Therefore, if you ask the average person what the options are when it comes to diapers, the vast majority will only be able to tell you about disposables and the traditional terry flats with safety pins.

Cloth diapers have, in fact, come a long way in the last 10 years. One type which has become increasingly popular around the world has actually already been used in the US by generations of moms. These are prefold diapers.

Prefold diapers are typically rectangular but unlike terry flat diapers which have one layer, a prefold diaper is named thus from the number of layers in the 3 panels which make up the diaper. A 4 x 6 x 4 prefold diaper has 4 layers of fabric on the sides and 6 layers through the center panel, although some prefold diaper makes and sizes may have more. One advantage behind this design is that unlike flat diapers which need to be folded in various ways to get the absorbency where it’s needed, prefold diapers have the center panel with the extra layers. Folding prefold diapers is very simple, there are several ways this can be done and we will be adding instructions to this website on how to do this shortly. Most people would use a diaper cover over the prefold diaper, making it more water proof.

Prefold diapers come in a range of different fabrics and styles such as:

• bleached cotton prefold diapers,
• unbleached cotton prefold diapers,
• organic cotton prefold diapers,
• hemp prefold diapers,
• bamboo prefold diapers,
• chinese prefold diapers, and
• indian prefold diapers.
